census, make it count

Census - Let your faith count

The information you provide in the Census helps estimate Australia’s population, which is used to distribute government funds and plan services for your community. Census data is also used by individuals and organisations in the public and private sectors to make informed decisions on policy and planning issues that impact the lives of all Australians. In the census there is a question on religion. Why should I write The Salvation Army in the “Other” box on the Census? Read More...

John Cleary- Radio National, explores the role of the Salvation Army in Australia

Soul Food

"‘WHAT IS YOUR soul saying to you?’ he asked. The question threw me. I had never thought about that before. I know my body cries out for food when I’m hungry. I know my mind lets me know when I’m feeling happy or sad. But it had never occurred to me to ask what my soul might be saying." As well as this inspiring story you will find here testimonials of the MindBodySpirit festival.

New Testament Women in Culture

What does it mean to be a woman? What mix of characteristics defines my femininity? These are questions that many women ask, and often the answers that the bible appears to offer us make the process of self-understanding more confusing! What exactly are we to do with Paul’s apparent prohibition of women teaching? What is a “biblical” understanding of gender??

Dreams & Visions: God's Purpose For Our Lives (Pt 4)

If we have ‘caught the vision splendid’ then we must align ourselves with that vision and make it our number one priority. We must go back to the way God intended it to be in the first place. We must get back to scripture and appreciate that it is the word of the Lord. In 1 Corinthians 3:11–14 we note the following: ‘For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ'

Dreams & Visions: God's Purpose For Our Lives (Pt 3)

Many congregational hymns contain references to dreams and visions. The following are some samples from The Salvation Army Song Book: ‘Clear to faith’s vision the cross reveals beautiful actions of love.’ ‘Before we taste of death / We see thy Kingdom come / O might we hold the vision bright / And make this hill our home.’

Spiritual Practises: Sabbath

n the ten commandments, God instructed the Israelites to “remember the Sabbath and keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8). In the past this Sabbath rest was built into the regular cycle of our working weeks. Shops did not open for very long on Saturdays, and not at all on Sundays. Nowadays Sunday trading has become a norm and the boundaries between work and life have been stretched out further and further.

Your New Corps Has Personality: Get To Know It

In the Australia Southern Territory January is the time for field changes. Many officers are now settling into new corps and getting to know their new congregations. There are a number of questions they will no doubt be asking, including how will I cope in this new communal context? What is this corps like? What are the touchy issues that divide people? What gifts has God given to the members of this corps?

Naming God: Hearing Voices from the Margins (Pt 2)

How we speak about God shapes us as people and as communities of faith. Speech about God is the primary way a faith community is constituted, “as the primary symbol of the whole religious system, the ultimate point of reference for understanding experience, life, and the world... Such speaking, in turn, powerfully moulds the corporate identity of the community and directs its praxis”.

Naming God: Hearing Voices from the Margins (Pt 1)

Hagar’s story is a tragic one. She did not have much choice in many of the things that shaped her life. It was not her fault that Sarai could not conceive, and it was certainly not her fault that Sarai came up with the brilliant plan of giving Hagar to Abram in order to have a child.

Bible-Believing Christians: A guide to trusting the Bible and resolving apparent contradictions

If you are looking for help with understanding the Bible and what some may view as contradictions in the script, a new book by Phil Layton has just been published. It comes well recommended by the world leader of The Salvation Army, General André Cox who has written a forward, as well as Major Amy Reardon, who is a member of the International Doctrine Council.

Fasting - Back on the Menu?

Tony Cauchi, Revival Librarian, wrote that he had made a discovery that “fasting has been the bread and butter of normal church life for 2000 years!” www.revival-library.org/leadership I believe that we do need to rediscover this important piece of information to release Holy Spirit power into our prayers for revival, help and break through.

The eternal generation or begetting of the Son

I have been asked to give a brief outline of my new book, The Eternal Generation of the Son: Maintaining Trinitarian Orthodoxy (InterVarsity). Some conservative evangelicals wish to remove ‘eternally begotten of the Father,’ from the Nicene Creed in the clause beginning, ‘We believe in Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,’ because they tell us these words have no biblical warrant, or they are of no great importance.

New Testament Women in Leadership

There is a modern fallacy that women in leadership is a new concept in the last few hundred years, an accommodation to secular feminism. However, women were very active in ministry in the early church, before the church started to institutionalise. If the church has accommodated to any culture’s views on gender roles, it was actually to the Greco-Roman assumptions about appropriate gender roles.

Welcome to and Acknowledgement of Country. The practice of being welcomed to Country or in turn acknowledging Country at official events or gatherings has been a topic of debate recently, so we thought it might be helpful to provide some answers to a few questions that come up from time to time.

Uncle Graham Paulson: Developing Australian Identity

There is a great need for a better understanding of what it means to be authentically Christian and authentically Australian. This new understanding will need to integrate the realities of Australian history, its successes and its failures. It will need to respect the diverse cultural backgrounds of the many people who now call themselves Australian.
