Homelessness Week 2017

Download complete resource pack here

Unfortunately, homelessness is a significant social issue in Australia. There are currently 105,237 people in Australia who are homeless. Of these, over a quarter are under the age of 18, 56% are males, 25% are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the majority sleep in overcrowded dwellings.

According to the latest Economic and Social Indicators Survey, 66% of people who utilise Salvation Army services reported extreme housing stress, spending over 50% of their income on housing. While 25% reported housing stress, spending 30-50 % of their income on housing.

Recognising the needs of people in our communities, The Salvation Army has responded strongly. We are one of the largest providers of homelessness services. Across the country we are engaged in specialist services and integrated. Each faith community also has a role to play, offering friendship, care and practical responses to those in their neighbourhoods experiencing homelessness.

Included in this pack are resources designed for use during Homelessness Week. We have put together resources for meetings, a list of educational resources for those who want to go deeper and an opinion piece.
