Overdose of reality
The annual international overdose awareness day on 31 August gives us the opportunity to ‘raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death. It also acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have met with death or permanent injury as a result of drug overdose.’
Through education and resources, through shared stories and support, the long-term tragedy of overdose is preventable.
The global event was commenced by Sally Finn at The Salvation Army’s Crisis Services in St Kilda, in conjunction with the City of Port Phillip, in 2001. It has been overseen by Melbourne’s Penington Institute since 2012.
